I wonder if "Derpy" has a cousin with Heterochromia?

You gotta appreciate how much Bloodlust tries to make both Celestia and Luna appear truly evil and heartless.

Both of the Celestia graphics were built by Qsteel, whereas the Luna (or "Nightmare Moon") graphics were from 90Sigma and Stabzor, respectively.

The blue lull background was made by Kupzzz, the golden burst of the sun background by Mkrukowski, and the exploding nighttime sky background by Daftopia.

All these people are from DeviantART.

@Jarkes: Yes, remember Pinkie's memories? One may even wonder what might have been missing from Nova Reach's recall.

Makes me wonder if Sonic Adventure may have been something like this. Every cutscene where two or more playable characters meet is different depending on which story you're currently in. That includes the dialogue. Even the first four books of the New Testament. They're all the same story told from the perspective of four different guys.

I think that was the idea with Adventure, that in each story where the same thing is happening (such as when knuckles, sonic and big are all in the same place) each story has different things happening based on the character's perspective.

For instance, as Big is oblivious to anything but himself and froggy, practically the only things he sees at the egg carrier scene are things related to froggy (Chaos 6, sonic saying he'll rescue froggy).

Ohluna I'm starting to get back into the whole "write a wall about a sonic game" thing again.

@Jarkes: I thought that initially, until I took a closer look. The PS2/Wii version doesn't spit all over the actual Sonic formula QUITE as much as the PS3/360 version.

That one is just all "SPEED! SPEED! SPEED!"

Yes, the low-polygon one is kinda like that, too, but not quite as much. It pays slightly more attention to platforming and exploration... slightly. As opposed to the new "Extreme Train Simulator" format of recent titles. The HD version feels far more boxed in and overcrowded. Plus, there are quicktime events EVERYWHERE. Plus, the less shiny version lets play Punch-Out! Hazzaugh!

@AuraX: Platforming, Exploration, and Speed. It even has SOME attention to physics. You actually get to PLAY the game, and not just react quickly to overcrowded, linear, constricting highways.

Yes, Unleashed has better graphics and a more solid engine, but that doesn't help much. (Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 1 and 2 are two of my favorite 3rd-person shooters and they have terrible graphics and a shoddy engine.)

You can plainly see that, the most I can give them, is that they actually made an effort with Next-Gen. The set the bar high, and they couldn't reach it. Sonic Unleashed, they set the bar at a record-LOW. So, obviously, they were able to reach that bar with minimal effort.

This is why I despise Unleashed, Colors, and Generations so much. They encourage the player to interact with the game as little as possible. Forget what Metal Gear Solid did. We have NEW ways of taking control away from the player!

I hated Next-Gen so much when I discovered what it truly was. Then, these other games started popping up, that have NOTHING to do with what made Sonic stand out in the first place, and I started to appreciate it a lot more. And it's STILL terrible.

@Sabbo: Yeah, if the storybook games count, I could say Black Knight was the single-WORST mainstream title EVER.

@Sabbo Again: Because, they follow that exact same formula: Boxed-in linear pathways that don't want you going left or right 90% of the time.

And jumping from static rectangle to static rectangle does not make for good platforming. Because the levels in these games are all build with the same "GOGOGOGOGO!" nature, they all feel the same in these three games, and their levels really don't stand out from one another, apart from their visuals.
(Well... except for, maybe, Eggmanland.)

These games have lost sight of platforming, exploration, and physics. They just want speed. No skill, just speed. No decent, well-planed stories with subtleties or symbolism. Just running because running is running.

Jarkes (Guest)

reply

@Lugbzurg: Yeah, they made an effort in Next-Gen, but because they were forced to make it a PS3 launch title, it was VERY rushed. And it shows.

And I completely disagree with you about Colors and Generations being "Extreme Train Simulator" format. Yes, you CAN just hold boost to win, but most of the time, you don't actually HAVE to do that (there are a few sections in Generations where using the boost is a VERY good idea, however). Not to mention that the boost is much harder to maintain in Colors, so it's not used as much. Colors also has the Wisps, which work very well for the most part (except for Frenzy in 3D sections...). And seriously, we've been over this, Colors and Generations have PLENTY of platforming segments.

The day time stages in Unleashed do qualify though. Both versions.

Also... Mach Speed. And the billiard ball puzzle. And "End of the World." And the EXTREMELY BROKEN PHYSICS IN ALL OF THOSE. Your argument is invalid.

As for the HD versions of Unleashed being "overcrowded..." At least stuff is actually HAPPENING. Wii version, you can go entire levels and only run into a few enemies.

Plus, you've complained about recent Sonic games taking themselves too seriously (which Colors and Generations really don't). Sonic 06 took itself EXTREMELY seriously, what with the FREAKING APOCALYPSE THAT WAS CAUSED BY A PRINCESS'S TEARS. And the whole kiss thing...

I also immensely disagree with you about Colors and Generations not being very interactive. Unleashed, yeah, you've got me there, but Colors and Generations? Not so much.

Also, in the Wii/PS2 version of Unleashed, the ONLY thing that affects your rank is how fast you beat the stage. 360/PS3 version at least has you actually earn points and stuff from defeating enemies and doing other stuff. Wii/PS2? Um... why exactly does it have that "Action Chain" thing keep popping up when said chain amounts to NOTHING?

And for all the problems the Werehog had... there was certainly a lot of platforming in THOSE sections, weren't there?

...Sorry, AuraX, for the additional giant wall of text.

@Lugbzurg: And the automovement stuff in Secret Rings always bugged me. Said automovement prevented me from getting past Pirate Storm, because of those ridiculously tiny boxes in the water that you HAD to jump across.

You complain about recent Sonic games not being very interactive and losing sight of exploration and physics? Secret Rings had the same issue. You were automatically moving forward, and there were NO alternate pathways whatsoever. Colors has different paths you can take using the various Wisps, and you do have to explore a bit to find all the Red Rings. Generations? Well... I've only ever played a 100%-cleared file at a friend's house, but I HAVE come across alternate pathways in some of those stages.

Plus, you have the Classic Sonic stages in Generations, so I'm sure you were pleased with those, right?

@Jarkes: Yeah, the levels in Colors and Generations still look a lot like "Drag Race meets Dynamite" to me. You're still not doing much. And the pathways are still really thin most of the time.

Look at Sonic 3 & Knuckles along with Sonic Adventure. There is a LOT for you to do. The areas are wide open, ripe for exploration. Each level is completely different and even goes for different pacing. Plus, they've got some really good stories, even containing subtleties. And Half-Life has taught us that subtleties make for STELLAR storytelling.

Also, I liked how the Genesis and Adventure titles took themselves seriously. I love that about their stories. These recent titles, however, put on a smug face and put up the most obvious uninspired stories out there.

Because Sega's recent attempt at copying their success with Sonic Adventure back in 2006, they're now scared of trying to make a game that gives the player free reign and a captivating story.

You're also confusing me a little. You like that the Genesis and Adventure titles took themselves seriously, but you complain about recent titles taking themselves too seriously.

...Although... I do have to agree with you about Generations's plot being a little uninspired. They didn't really DO much with the whole time travel thing, and the fact that there's barely any real boss battles doesn't help.

Though at least the voice acting in Colors and Generations is actually GOOD. Yes, the stories in the Adventure games were great, but I had trouble taking them seriously with that acting.

...Does anyone besides me wish Sega would do a Director's Cut of sorts of Sonic 06, or perhaps build a new game from the ground up which would be what they had originally intended Sonic 06 to be (in terms of gameplay, exploration, and physics, not in terms of story)?

Which generation of Pokemon is the best? I like Gen III myself, despite having made fun of it on earlier pages. Though I think Gen V is probably the best so far. Gen I... oy, that generation has NOT aged well at all (hi, broken Psychic type and glitch Pokemon!). Generation II... I've gotten so used to the Gen IV remakes of those games, it'd probably be very weird playing the original versions again. Same with FireRed/LeafGreen.

Generation IV, however... ...Why do I still not have Platinum Version? Diamond and Pearl have some SERIOUS issues, not the least of which is the dreaded "Saving a lot of data" that occurs EVERY time you do ANYTHING with your PC.

@AuraX: I'm still not sure about getting Platinum, what with Black and White 2 on the horizon. I mean, it'd be nice, but at this point, the primary reason I'd get another Gen IV game would be for Poke Transfer purposes to my copy of White Version. Heck, the only reason I kept Diamond was to catch certain Pokemon that can only be obtained on White via Transfer or the Dream World, the latter of which I'd prefer not to have to do. In fact, the only reason I ended up getting Black version a full YEAR after getting White was so I could trade over evolutionary stones to White version in order to make a conscious effort to actually complete the Pokedex for once (not counting whatever event Legendaries I haven't already gotten a hold of). See, I had idiotically sold most of the evolutionary stones I had obtained in White Version. Not my brightest of moves, especially given the VERY limited number of guaranteed obtainable stones in these games (you've got the dust clouds in caves, but I've only ever obtained stones from them twice; the rest of the time I get those useless Gems).

As for the story... well, I mentioned Modern Warfare 3. Two major issues with that game's story.

1. The invasion plan isn't to invade one small colony at a time or anything logical like that, but to invade the entire landscape in question all at once!

2. Even when a peace treaty was being arranged, someone just had to be all "Peace? The heck with that. With everything to lose, I say... 'BOMBS AWAY!!!' Now, we can get back to random killing, again!"

@AuraX: Speaking of Houndoom, when I had started over on Diamond recently, I actually traded over a Houndour from my SoulSilver game card so I'd have a decent fire-type (and the Dark typing of that evolutionary line is pretty nice, too), since I had started with Turtwig this time around, and otherwise I'd just have the mediocre Ponyta/Rapidash line (though if I had decided to go for that one, I would've made sure to catch a female one and nickname it Twilight).

And SPEAKING of nicknames... On most of my Pokemon games, the nicknames of my core team have a bit of a theme going for them. On Diamond, I go for Final Fantasy playable characters (has to be playable or at least temporarily playable). On SoulSilver, I go for the names of various Power Rangers (...what?). On Black and White... ...Actually, I haven't decided on a theme naming system for my Unova-based games yet. At least, if I do, I don't remember what it was for Black... Oh yeah, it was nicknames based off of Ultimate Yoshi's characters from his different comics. ...He's another user here on Smackjeeves who's comics I regularly read and comment on.

And then there was that one level where you had Black Arms and Eggman robots in the same level, and both the Hero AND Dark character would chew you out for attacking the robots. Eggman, yeah, I can understand him being mad about it... but Amy?

Yeah, I'm weird like that. I actually enjoyed Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog. However, I can't stand Unleashed, Colors, or Generations all that much.

@Jarkes: Oh, yes. If you want to play a third-person shooter with proper aim, I would say to go for Ratchet & Clank. I also find it odd that you can't kill any of the GUN soldiers, but you can kill everything else.

@Lugbzurg: See, Sonic Heroes is awesome, despite the fact that all four teams go through basically the same stages and bosses. Well, okay, the stages vary in layout a little, but the only team that doesn't follow essentially the same exact path in each level is Team Chaotix. Team Sonic and Team Dark's stages are pretty similar to each other (though the Dark stages are usually longer and have some other differences here and there), and Team Rose's stages are basically Team Sonic's stages cut in half; again, with some very minor differences. ...Well, okay, you've got the varying amounts of enemies too, but... Seriously, how exactly was Metal Sonic able to build 4 Egg Hawks, Robot Carnivals, Egg Albatrosses, Robot Storms, and Egg Emperors, and fight all four teams in essentially the same locations? When exactly does each story take place in relation to one another?

Like I said, though, it's still loads of fun, and it's one of the only 3D Sonic games with actual Special Stages instead of having the Chaos Emeralds just handed to you in a cutscene. Or in Shadow the Hedgehog's case, the first Emerald is literally just handed to you near the beginning of the first level!

...I'd like to see them make another game like Sonic Heroes, only this time, give each team completely different stages and bosses. And make the fight against Metal Sonic a little more challenging. ...See, it always bugged me a little that you never got to fight Metal Sonic in his kickass "Neo Metal Sonic" form. Instead, he basically turns into a mechanical version of Perfect Chaos. Not that the Metal Madness battle wasn't FUN, mind you, but Metal Overlord... well, it was WAY too easy to charge up your Team Blasts, considering that's the only way he could be damaged. I've beaten the entire main game at least 3 times, and Metal Overlord has NEVER had the chance to use Chaos Control and freeze time for twenty seconds.

I love how we rarely ever talk about the comic itself here...

So, anyway... when does this comic take place in relation to the series? And are you going to include any Season 2 characters in this, despite the fact that you started this right when Season 2 had literally just started? I'm speaking specifically of Shining Armor and Cadence, because I really like those two characters, even if they hadn't really been mentioned before the season 2 finale.

@Jarkes: This is actually the first time you've ever said that in memory.

It is odd that we don't talk about the comic itself isn't it? Quite a rarity, wouldn't you say...?

To some degree, I'm somewhat telling this the way Valve has been telling their Half-Life story. They're making it up as the go along. Me and this? It's not entirely like that, but it's relatively-similar. There were several important plot points I hadn't thought of when I first started this. Case in point: This scene. I hadn't even thought of Bloodlust or Eon's return when I first started it up. The chapter was going to be a bit more casual, at first. Then, more and more story kept going into my head, and it's now around a hundred-or-so times larger than I had originally anticipated.

But, Season 2 characters? I do have some planned. You'll just have to see which ones. In fact, if you look carefully in the last page, you may notice Fancy Pants and Fleur de Lis. In fact, at some point, you may even see some Season 3 characters, whatever they may turn out to be. We do know that Shining Armor and Cadence will have a daughter named "Skyla", but, other than that, I don't think any other new characters for Season 3 have been mentioned, yet.

As such, I agree with many if not all of his reviews, the exception being a difference of opinion with regards to the Kiss Anthology. Therefore, I refuse to read anything related to sonichu on the grounds that Linkara has stated that it is the worst comic on the internet. Add to that I've seen the kind of decadent artwork the comic appears to represent and you have an opinion that equates to avoidance at all costs.

I'm not a hater, you're just going to have to convince me, give me a reason really, why I should give it a look over instead of overlooking. I value and respect the opinion of __Professional__ Critics even if I don't necessarily agree with them.

@Sabbo Again: Here's the list of issues he had:

Issues:
1) Comma abuse. This is especially notable in the opening chapter.

2) Lavender Unicorn Syndrome (but not TOO bad). Same as above..

3) Two speakers, one paragraph. This is a big no-no.

“Okie dokie lokie!” Pinkie Pie replied as she bounced happily out the door, with the dresses following behind her, despite not being attached to anything she could have been pulling.
Rarity stared at the open door for a moment. “How does she do that?”

4) Mis-phrase. If it hadn't been for Angel, she WOULD have been late.

overslept, and if it hadn’t been for Angel waking me up and reminding me, I wouldn’t have been late…”

5) Comma abuse in the second chapter, via Spike.
6) Type numbers out. It's easy to say 'up to a thousand miles'.

up to 1,000 miles

7) Jarring. All of a sudden, they developed a jet powered chariot? That seems a bit out of norm.
8) Italicize the class of any new ship. Or the name of the ship. Example: Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.

Not sure what the second one means, and he misinterpreted number 4 (Fluttershy THOUGHT she was late, hence the following line of dialogue from Rainbow Dash, assuring her that she was actually right on time). But even if I do go back and edit them, it won't require another full rewrite.

"Love and Tolerate"... not only are those two words near-opposites, but that's a horrible way to live.

It says to never take a stand for what you believe to be right. That you must always let things that bother you just slide. It's because of "Love and Tolerance" that this whole Everfree Northwest debacle happened. The staff did nothing about it, despite being informed. No one stepped in to stop it.

Let's also not forget that the show has NEVER displayed any such thing. EVER. Heck, we even have an entire episode dedicated to this. It's called "Putting your hoof down".

Here, take a look at this. It can explain a whole lot more in greater detail.

In fact, here's a direct quote from a staff member from Redditt:

"I was a security staff member at the con. I did not see any evidence of this type of rampant rudeness. For the most part, the crowd was very respectful, and, in my experience, anyone who was doing anything like what this post mentions was dealt with properly. I can say for sure that the person mentioned who wanted to "purchase pornography" was kicked out of the con.

Everyone should keep in mind that we are not omnipotent, and as such some of this stuff will unavoidably fall through the cracks, especially with a fandom that is enthusiastic and varied as this one is. I can say with 100% certainty, however, that this post is exaggerating or fabricating any problems with the con."

And really, Tumblr is far from a reliable source of information. Not to mention, the original tumblr post that started this whole mess had links to 4chan, because THAT'S a site you can trust.

Oh, and most of these sources I'm talking about? They were there.

@jarkes

Accept my apologies for my lack of on the spot responses to your earlier inquiry.

I've encountered far worse writing and artwork than Sonichu. After all, some works of art were made exclusively to release pain and frustration. It's a way of managing environmental insults and emotional damage.

Before I developed my prefrontal cortex, the act of creating and destroying physical objects (not people, or property) to fulfill my own needs and purposes was sufficient.

However, now that I've developed a few more cognitive functions, I realize my lust for power and control of mankind can be realized with impulse control and behavioral conditioning.

For instance, it takes a special kind of genius to make a bad Idea or decision work. As everyone knows, bad ideas and decisions are essential in order to stimulate divergent thinking. Which, as you well know, is a sign of true genius.

After all, what's the point of knowing all the tropes, memes, and contrived conventions, if you don't rock the boat every once in a while?

The point is I think that Sonichu has sufficiently proven someone can take a bad idea and make it work under the right conditions.

Which is why, I intend to take upon myself, the cur-sed task of re-visioning speculative fiction altogether with "Don Quixote"... I can see it crossed into the mythology of "Puss in Boots" and "Juan Bobo" quite handsomely without the Stigma of "Zorro."

It will be the most elaborate fan comic ever! Mu wa Ha hah ha ha! And the best part, art and literary critics will complement me for its originality. When in reality it will be as original and marvelous to behold as Sonichu was in the audio play.

In fact, I am so confident that it will work I'll make the main character a traveling Shakespearean minstrel in the style of "The jazz singer." Just to spice things up and make the story more interesting.

And the initial tumblr post that brought this issue to attention claimed that the alleged hurtful remarks were directed at them during their own panel. If nothing else, that part is definitely untrue.

Maybe some bad stuff went down. As you've said, it wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened. But it does seem that the vast majority of congoers to EFNW didn't experience any problems.

If you're talking other fanfictions, I haven't found one that really struck me well, just yet. What I've run into thus far has been either eventless, lackluster, boring, pompus, poorly-structured, flat-out awful, out-of-character/demoralistic, or was so awesome right up until it caught a fever of Mass Effect 3 syndrome. However, one that looks interesting to me is... I think it's called "The New Royal Guard". I think I should take a look at that, sometime. I suppose that with the elite style it goes for, the idea of Derpy wearing an eyepatch strikes me as genius. Then again, it's a comic as well, so I think I can relate.

As I recall from Equestria Daily's (fluctuatingly-unstable) rules and regulations, when it comes to works like this, the actual author, or a representative of theirs must submit it, or they won't accept it.

I kind of agree with you with regards to some fanfictiony things. However, it most certainly cannot be any more demoralistic than some of those ridiculous Secret to my success and management fantasies I've read over the years. Stories like "Zapp!" and "The Five Minute Salesman," and that one with the mysterious stranger on a train that helps people realize their full potential as managers, among others.

I think my new favorite in the genre is "The Covenant Secret: The Master Key To Succees" I've only read two chapters and it's shaping up to be the greatest work of satire ever. Everyone in the story is an incompetent boob, Including the stereotypical mentor. The wondrous guiding principle of the story itself is that "the people are stupid."

The post a comment feature, and having so few respondents makes having a forum meaningless... and I don't work here, I swear.

@Sabbo Again: Yes, that is pretty much what I want to do with it. There's more to it than that. I remember mentioning it on The Elements of Peace. Here's what I said...

"As a matter of fact, when I saw that "knife only reactions" video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLF5y5p1hH0
...I started thinking "I should totally have several of the enemies act like this when you kill them! Especially when you use the knife on them! And the guy you're working for doesn't like you using the the knife, for some reason..." (Don't ask me, ask the angry multiplayers that get mad at you for killing so well in a game about killing some many things so well.)

Oh, and of course we can't forget the two-weapon slots, free-for-all being the 4th multiplayer mode instead of the 1st, out-of-place vehicle section, fluctuating states of "realism", angry angsty gary-stews that treat everyone like dirt and everyone puts up with it just 'cause, overly-clustered heads up display, assault rifles that actually work like machine guns instead of assault rifles, infinate-ammo pistols, random guns everywhere, things that glow when you point at them or when they go behind walls, protips everywhere, product-placement, numerous unnecessary long cutscenes that show you things you don't even need to see and break the individual levels apart, DLC problems, unchecked glitches, quick-time events, random vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity (except with censor bleeps this time around), guns and guns everywhere, only being able to carry 4 of the same type of grenade, arrows pointing you in the right direction for nearly everything, perk systems, and a war against Russia for no conceivable reason! (I like to think it's because they have a dart board with a gigantic bulls-eye that says "Russia" on it!)"

It's bound to have plenty of 4th wall humor in it! Plus, how often do you see actual videogames acting as a parodying work of satire? You see a lot of these things based on videogames, but not a lot that are actual games, themselves.

@Parfait d'Amour: Whoa...
Did I mention how much I appreciate your presence? I really do. That nailed it! That's essentially what I've been wanting to do! Just longer, and with that "necessary" vehicle section and whatnot. Now, I want to get Bulletstorm even more! I'd love to see Epic Games make Duty Calls into full game!

@epicness: "FFS"? "Final Fantasy Shooter"?

I, myself, really like Half-Life, Doom, Quake, 007 (before Activision took the rights), Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, and also Halo, as well. I'd really like to take a look at Serious Sam, ARMA, and Duke Nukem. 'Cause, all I've been able to get through have been the first one-and-a-half levels of Duke Nukem 64. Oh, and let's not forget Bulletstorm, of course! Rage might be good, too.
